Ministry of Defence Civilian Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Official Participation in London Pride March on 04 July 2009

Introduction

1. The purpose of this DIN is to inform all civilian staff across the Department about the official participation in London Pride March on 04 July 2009.

Background

2. This year’s ‘Pride London’ event will take place in central London on 04 Jul 09. Service and Civil Service Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) personnel will be permitted to march in the parade element of the event. Following the success of the event in 2008, authority has been given to individuals marching in ‘agreed clothing’ on the day. They are representing their department and will be on official duty.

3. Pride London is a large public event which attracts up to 600,000 members of the public from the UK and overseas. The event also attracts worldwide media attention and so the very highest of standards of dress and conduct are required to ensure that the department and MOD are portrayed in a positive light as modern, inclusive employers that welcome men and women from a diverse range of backgrounds.

4. The attire for civilians marching is as follows:

Plain black trousers or smart jeans and shoes with official MOD Purple Polo Shirt - no trainers.

No other form of dress is permitted for marching civilians. It should be noted that the wearing of the polo shirts by civilians will be permitted only for the March element at the Pride London event. Attendance at all other Pride events (e.g. Cornwall, Manchester, Brighton, Glasgow etc) is only to be in civilian clothing.

Registration

5. All personnel who wish to take part in Pride London 2009 are to attend the parade and security briefing in the Gascoyne Room of the Union Jack Club at 1045hrs on 04 Jul 09. Transport will take personnel to the start of the parade. Anyone who does not attend the briefing and is not on the coach will not be permitted to take part. At the end of the parade coaches will take all personnel back to the Union Jack Club where they are to change out of their uniform.

6. Individuals who would like advice about the event, or just wish to take part, should register their interest by 5 June 2009, and obtain joining instructions from Paul Howarth on paul.howarth@de.mod.uk. If you do not have email access, please write to (please mark your letter “Private”) Paul Howarth, Defence Estates, 1st Floor – Zone D, St George’s Court, 2-12 Bloomsbury Way, London WC1A 2SH.

Travel and Subsistence

7. As this is official duty, T&S is payable and is funded locally. You should submit your claim in the normal way.

Contact Details

8. Further advice may be obtained from Donna Holland, DGCP-EF Diversity 4b, Main Building, Level 6, Zone K, Horse Guards Avenue, Whitehall, SW1A 2HB, 020 7218 7633.
