MOD Website Updates From: Dear Sir Thank you for your e-mail to the Ministry of Defence public enquiry line, which concerns the information contained on the MOD website entitled “Homosexuality and the Armed Forces”. The webpage was designed as a means of promulgating the change in policy in January 2000 which lifted the ban on gay and lesbian people serving in the Armed Forces. Although this remains factually correct, you are right to point out that things have moved on significantly since then. I am writing to let you know that we intend to remove this webpage and replace it, in due course, with a webpage we are currently developing setting out details of the Armed Forces General Diversity Strategy. The new page will, amongst other things, include a policy statement on sexual orientation. However, it is not intended that the new webpage will contain the level of detail you suggest, in respect of any of the diversity strands. Up-to-date information on pension arrangements for all service personnel are contained in the section of the MOD Website dedicated to the Armed Forces Pension Scheme under “Defence Issues” in the “Personnel and Families” section. With regard to the Civil Partnerships Act 2004, MOD Ministers have yet to make any formal announcement on the full implications of this legislation for the Armed Forces. We will consider whether any information on this issue needs to be carried on the website once an announcement is made. I hope explains the current position and thank you again for your helpful enquiry. page: documents :: modwebsite.htm |
